Spirit of Madeline
A very personal honor to have my idea chosen to pay tribute to all Anishinaabe of the area & represent the Madeline Island, LaPointe, Wisconsin area. Not only because I have Ojibwe ancestry, but I am a descendant of Chief White Crane & daughter Equaysayway (Princess Madeline), married to French fur trader Michel Cadotte.
When I discovered that the Crane Clan were identified as the founders of the Ojibwe villages on Madeline Island, I loved the imagery of the crane rising from the earth. I also wanted to incorporate imagery I felt essential to Madeline Island’s history; fur trading, logging, seasons, fishing, Native-American heritage, flora, reptile & land animal.
These images surround the crane on it’s concrete base.
Chief Buffalo also played a huge role establishing treaty contracts & I hope there will be more sculptures to highlight his contributions.
Murals
I was fortunate to receive a grant at the beginning of covid. I’m proud of the joy that it has brought to the area.
